This was my first recording as a leader for ECM and first time working with Manfred Eicher. It was also recorded eleven days before my mother died. I visited her in the hospital and played her the piece “Maria Lydia” (written for her). She had her eyes closed and after it was finished said one word: “gorgeous.”
